Most of the recipes on this blog have been created and adapted with Jeni Britton-Bauer’s “eggless” ice cream making technique in mind, and I am absolutely thrilled about her new book, Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams At Home, which arrived in the mail this week!
HOW COOL IS THIS - “Your Go-To Recipe for Experimenting”.

Of course, thanks to Amazon’s “Click To Look Inside!” feature, months ago I had already scrutinized those few pages and sucked in whatever information I could. So much so that I felt knowledgeable geeky enough to draw up this ROUGH GUIDE for myself…

*Note that my illustrated process doesn’t exactly match what is in the book. Jeni recommends adding the “flavor” after cooking and straining the ice cream base, but I tend to add the flavor to cook with the ice cream base.
As for the “Ziploc bag in Ice Bath” …. I am too lazy to set this up so I just stick the hot bowl in the freezer for 30 minutes or so before transferring it to the fridge. I also rarely churn the ice cream on the same day and usually let the flavors deepen overnight.
Back to the book - I love it and highly recommend it.

Lots of yummy recipes categorized by season; a pleasing minimalistic design (= easy to follow) with beautiful photos of Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams.
TIP: If you live in Los Angeles and don’t want to pay the $35 shipping fee to order these ice creams from Columbus OH, head on over to Handy Market in Burbank. They carry seasonal flavors too!
I wish I had remembered to take photos! I had a ‘Ice Cream Soiree’ at my home last night with some fabulous friends. The flavors on the table were:
Mexican Coffee
Pistachio-Apricot
Orange-Date
Tamarind
Coconut & Cherries
Blackberry Sorbet
Papaya-Lime Sorbet
Goat Cheese & Pears
Horchata
Vanilla Peach & Blackberries
Avocado
It was so much fun, and even more so to receive glowing compliments from my foodie friends/ice-cream tasters.
TWEETS:
@Faustfatale: Blown away by @lilita_yaya ‘s ice cream as usual. Fave flavors: Pistachio apricot and coconut with roasted cherries. Also papaya lime sorbet
@ChanningHansen: @lilita_yaya makes the best ice cream ever. Yes, better than Scoops. Honey Goat Cheese + roasted pears (w goats milk) is to die for.
Aw! Better than Scoops? Wow, what a compliment!
On June 26th, 2011 I am going to be at the Pasadena Food Swap with some homemade ice cream. I have never participated in a public food swapping/sharing event before and I’m both nervous and excited. Sign up! Join in! See you there!

In addition to my Cuisinart Ice Cream Maker, here are a few things that I can no longer live without:
Hand immersion blender - I recently bought one and I love it!!! So much easier to clean than a regular blender.
Microplane Zester - According to David Lebovitz in The Perfect Scoop, you have to double the amount of zest used in a recipe when you use a regular grater. Bye bye, regular grater.
Ice Cream Containers by SweetBliss - From experience, when you gift ice cream in plastic containers, you don’t get those containers back.
E.ggtimer.com/25minutes <— Go on, type this into your browser! (Yeah I know I need to get myself a real kitchen timer)
Lactaid- self-explanatory.

To be continued…The Ice Cream Lifestyle #2
